Squaws remain unbeaten in sub-region; lose second game to Laney

The Dodge County High Squaws basketball team won two of three games last week as they defeated sub-region foes Dublin 66-49 on Tuesday, January 13 and Toombs County 65-52 on Friday, January 16 to remain unbeaten in the sub-region at 6-0. The Squaws were not as lucky on Saturday, January 17 as they traveled to Augusta to take on the always tough and fifth ranked Lucy Laney Wildcats in a region 3AA crossover game and lost 66-47. The Squaws are now 15-2 overall and ranked third in the Georgia Sports Writer Association Poll and second in the GAsports.com Coaches/GACA Poll.

On Tuesday, the Squaws ran out to a 21-4 first quarter lead over the Lady Irish of Dublin. Nisha Walker and Michelle Mitchell each had six points to lead Dodge in the quarter. Dodge outscored the Lady Irish 14-13 in the second quarter to hold on to a 35-17 halftime lead. Mitchell had four points and Walker had a three-pointer to pace the Squaws in the quarter. Janna Anderson scored seven points and Tahitia Butler put in six in the third quarter to lead Dodge to 52-34 lead after three quarters. Walker and Butler had four points each in the final quarter to hold the Squaws to a 66-49 victory over Dublin. Final scoring for the Squaws against Dublin was: Tahitia Butler, 16 points; Michelle Mitchell, 14 points; Nisha Walker, 13 points; Janna Anderson, nine points; Kemiya Harrell, nine points; Yaleisa Burns, three points; and Staci Ross, two points.

Michelle Mitchell had 10 points in the first quarter against Toombs County on Friday to lead the Squaws to 19-6 first quarter lead. Toombs County came back in the second quarter, with the Squaws starters on the bench, as they outscored the second five 23-8 to take a 29-27 halftime lead. With Dodge’s starters back in the game in the third quarter, the Squaws outscored The Lady Bulldogs 23-11 to take a 50-38 third quarter lead. Nisha Walker led the way with 10 points in the quarter. Mitchell had five points in the final quarter as Dodge held on for a 65-52 win over the Lady Bulldogs. Final scoring for the Squaws against Toombs County was: Michelle Mitchell, 18 points; Tahitia Butler, 14 points; Nisha Walker, 14 points; Yaleisa Burns, six points; Janna Anderson, three points; Kemiya Harrell, two points; Staci Ross, two points; Shae Level, two points; Jaye Hilliard, two points Courtni Howard, two points.

The Squaws held tough in the first quarter against the Laney Lady Wildcats on Saturday as they trailed 15-11 after one quarter. Michelle Mitchell had four points for the Squaws. The second quarter seem to doom the Squaws against a much taller Lady Wildcat team as the Laney’s  two 6-3 girls rebounded missed shots and scored. The Squaws were outscored 22-8 in the quarter. Mitchell again had four points to lead Dodge.  Nisha Walker led Dodge in the third quarter with eight points, but the Squaws couldn’t make up much ground as they still trailed 54-33. Dodge outscored Laney 14-12 in the final quarter but fell to the Lady Wildcats, 66-47 for only the Squaws second loss of the season. Final scoring for the Squaws was: Nisha Walker, 15 points; Tahitia Butler, 11 points; Kemiya Harrell, 10 points; Michelle Mitchell, nine points; Janna Anderson, two points.

The Squaws were schedule to host Bleckley County on Tuesday, January 20. They travel to Vidalia on Friday, January 23 for a rematch with the 13-2 and fourth ranked Lady Indians. The Squaws return home Saturday, January 24 for region cross-over game with Southeast Bulloch and then travel to East Laurens on Tuesday, January 27.
